Holiday Drinking & DUI Statistics

Holiday Drinking & DUI Statistics

In California, the holiday season isn’t only a time for presents and family gatherings--it is also a time with some of the highest DUI arrests. Research shows that the time between Christmas and New Year’s has some of the highest amounts of DUI arrests nationwide. For such reasons, law enforcement often increases patrols throughout the city at all times of the day.

Holiday DUI Statistics

  • Increase in DUI Checkpoints: During the holiday season, law enforcement likes to monitor DUI cases more closely. For such reasons, they increase the number of DUI checkpoints throughout the city. They are most commonly set up on Friday nights.
  • In December of 2016, 3,067 people died in a motor vehicle accident--25 percent of those people lost their lives in a drunk-driving accident.
  • Holiday Drunk Driving Fatalities: During the New Year’s and Christmas periods in 2018, there were 285 drunk-driving-related fatalities. Last year, there were 10,511 people killed nationwide in drunk driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of the yearly driving fatalities.
  • An average of 300 people die every year during the week between Christmas and New Year. The U.S. Department of Transportation has found this to be a trend for the last five years.
