How a DUI Can Impact a College Student

We all know that college is a place for partying. Whether it’s in the dorm room, a bar on campus, a frat party, or a bar nearby, college students tend to party to “blow off steam” and unwind after a hectic week. While there’s nothing wrong with hanging with friends and having drinks, too many college students get “liquid courage” and drink and drive.

We’ve heard it before. A college student had two, maybe even three or four drinks, but he or she ate some appetizers at the bar. Or, maybe they drank vodka and energy drinks all night, had a strong cup of black coffee, or waited a little while until they were “good” and then they climbed behind the wheel. Maybe they were OK, maybe not. But, if such a person is pulled over on suspicion of DUI and it turns out they are impaired, a DUI conviction can in some cases, ruin college plans.

If you are ever arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Orange County, the first thing you need to do is hire a skilled DUI defense lawyer. If you are facing DUI charges in Southern California, an attorney may be able to get your charges reduced or dismissed altogether. You cannot underestimate the damaging effects of a DUI – it can affect your college education and your future career.

How a DUI can affect college students:

· Cause the student to lose their scholarship.

· Cause the student to be kicked off a college sport team.

· Cause the student to lose campus housing.

· Affect the student’s ability to pursue certain degrees, such as nursing, medicine, or law.

· Make it much harder for the student to find a good job, even if he or she is not seeking a professional license

· Bar a student from becoming a teacher or getting a government job.

· Bar a student from obtaining a job that requires a security clearance.

The fact that college students decompress by partying and drinking is nothing new; most of us have done it. However, college students need to be aware of how a DUI can affect their college careers and their futures. A DUI can cause a student to lose a scholarship, and it can cause them to be kicked off college sport teams. If you’re on an athletic scholarship, that can be a problem.

In certain professions, a DUI can be disastrous. For some college students, a DUI conviction will force them to give up their field of study, which can mean they have to give up a career in something they are passionate about. Driving under the influence is a risk you just don’t want to take.

From here on out whenever you drink, don’t drink and drive, not even if you’ve had a couple of drinks. Instead, call Uber, Lyft, or a cab – your future self will thank you for drinking responsibly and protecting your education and your career.
