Why DUI Heats Up in the Summer

If you live in Orange County, you know that everything “heats up” in the summer. Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, and Balboa Island become major tourist attractions; the beaches become seasonally busy with locals and tourists alike, and the nightlife rivals the fun in the sun.

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, it’s officially the busiest time of the year for coastal cities, but we’ve also entered the “100 deadliest days” of the summer driving season, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and AAA. Per MADD, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in the past five years, about 10 people a day died between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

If you’re a parent of a teenage driver, it’s important for you to know that the summertime is particularly dangerous for drivers between the ages of 16 and 19. Why is this? Because, more of these inexperienced drivers are on the roads, which means more opportunities to drink and drive and text while driving.

Check out this article published in USA Today, where it says teens are more likely to get into a car accident during the summer. While drinking and driving is a constant threat among young drivers, this particular article focuses on the dangers of teens who text while driving.

Why Does DUI Spike in the Summer?

There are several reasons; for example, more people are travelling. When people are on vacation, they have a habit of letting their guard down. Sometimes, this less-guarded behavior translates into drinking and driving. Also, drinking is a social activity and something people do while barbequing, going out to dinner, and hitting the town – all popular summertime activities.

In addition to the above, popular drinking holidays, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day all occur during the summer months and these are linked to an uptick in DUI accidents and arrests in South Orange County and the rest of the nation.
