Orange County Officials Looking for Holiday DUIs

Thanksgiving is weeks away and before we know it, Hanukkah and Christmas will be here. While this means it’s time to put together those Amazon wish lists and hit the malls, for law enforcement, the holidays have a very different meaning – it means the biggest DUI season of the year is just around the corner.

In the coming weeks, law enforcement agencies across Orange County and the rest of California will be greatly enhancing their efforts to crack down on holiday DUIs. During the holiday season, and especially Christmas and New Year's, rates of alcohol-involved traffic accidents and fatalities increase dramatically. As a result, law enforcement step up their efforts to arrest drunk and drugged motorists.

As law enforcement agencies do across the nation every year in the latter part of November, DUI taskforces will be assembled to seek out and arrest impaired motorists on California’s roadways. The period of increased DUI enforcement will begin in the third week of November and continue into the Christmas holiday and through New Year's.

Law enforcement officers will be focusing on the following efforts:

  • Sobriety Checkpoints - Officers will conduct DUI checkpoints to check drivers for signs of impairment. Officers at checkpoints also often check motorists to see if they have a valid license and no outstanding warrants.
  • Saturation Patrols - Saturation patrols involve an increase in the number of officers on the road who are looking specifically for signs of impaired drivers, which may include swerving, dangerous driving patterns, and more. These patrols are typically conducted at times and locations known for higher rates of impaired driving accidents.
  • Increased traffic stops - During this time of year, officers are on high alert for impaired drivers and will often be very zealous in pulling drivers over who exhibit danger driving behaviors or who commit traffic infractions.

At the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry, Inc., we wish everyone safe and happy holidays! We would also like to remind all motorists who will be celebrating in Orange County or any other community to be aware that law enforcement officials will be actively conducting increased DUI enforcement for the remaining of 2016 and through January 1st, 2017.
