Who doesn’t love Memorial Day weekend? It’s the first three-day weekend of the summer season that signifies barbeques, summer vacations, fun in the sun, and high school and college graduations.
As Orange County residents hit stores like Costco to load up on their favorite alcoholic beverages for the Memorial Day festivities, they don’t want to forget that Orange County’s DUI Task Force will be deploying officers over the holiday weekend to nab drunk and drugged drivers.
Law enforcement across the country are well-aware that drunk driving increases over Memorial Day weekend, and Orange County is NO exception. Each year, officers countywide step up their DUI enforcement efforts over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
As an Orange County resident, or visitor to the area, be aware that there will be DUI checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols throughout the county to arrest impaired drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Memorial Day Means More Drunk Drivers
Memorial Day weekend and drinking go hand-in-hand, thus it’s no wonder why the holiday is associated with a predictable rise in drunk driving crashes nationwide. Across Orange County, friends and family will be gathering to celebrate and alcohol will be at most of the celebrations.
If you will be partying this weekend, be sure to designate a sober driver, call Uber or Lyft, or a cab. Remember, if you’re 21 or over drinking is perfectly legal but drinking and driving is not!
Law enforcement will start its DUI patrols on Friday, May 27th this year and will continue through Monday, May 30th. Residents can also expect the California Highway Patrol to be deploying officers over Memorial Day weekend to patrol the freeways and country roads during this maximum enforcement period.
The DUI Task Force is generally funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety as a part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) anti-drinking and driving campaign.
In addition to Memorial Day weekend, the DUI Task Force kicks into high gear during the Independence Day and Labor Day holiday weekends.
