ORANGE, Calif. – On Friday, Jan. 22, the Orange Police Department held a driving under the influence checkpoint, which by the end of the night yielded two DUI arrests.
Where was the checkpoint? The Orange PD held the checkpoint from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Tustin, and it was a busy night for the officers assigned to the DUI checkpoint.
That evening, they screened over 800 vehicles that passed through. Of those, only two people were arrested on suspicion of DUI. However, the officers made arrests and issued citations to drivers suspected of driving on a revoked license and driving while unlicensed.
According to the Orange County Register, the Orange Police Department has been conducting DUI checkpoints as a part of its safety campaign, aimed at reducing drunk driving. The department wants to warn Orange County residents to driver sober and they’re telling people to report drunk drivers.
The Orange Police Department’s DUI checkpoints receive their funding from a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
If you will be driving in Orange County this weekend, please be aware that another DUI checkpoint is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. in Orange, the Orange County Register reported.
What makes a DUI checkpoint?
Ever wondered what exactly a DUI checkpoint is? The Governors Highway Safety Association® defines sobriety checkpoints, also known as DUI checkpoints, as locations where law enforcement officers station themselves to check drivers for signs of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Many jurisdictions, including Orange County use DUI checkpoints as a part of their bigger drunk driving campaign. Because of the legal issues surrounding sobriety checkpoints, not all states legalize DUI checkpoints.
Some states, such as California have laws that authorize them, while other states, such as Texas strictly forbid them. To learn more about which states authorize DUI checkpoints, click here.
