CHP: 150 DUI Arrests in LA Christmas Weekend

In Los Angeles County, the California Highway Patrol was busy arresting suspected drunk drivers over Christmas weekend. According to a CHP spokesman, the CHP arrested 150 drivers in Los Angeles County on suspicion of DUI over the holiday.

The arrests were made by the CHP during what’s known as the maximum enforcement period, which was conducted during the Christmas holiday period, which began Thursday and ran through Sunday.

During the same period in 2014, which lasted for one more day because of the day of the week that Christmas fell, one person was killed in a DUI-related incident in Los Angeles County and 132 arrests were made, according to CHP spokesman Officer Juan Galvan.

Statewide Statistics for DUI

Over the Christmas holiday period, CHP officers made a total of 608 DUI arrests statewide and 14 people were killed in crashes where a driver was accused of driving under the influence, according to Galvan.

Galvan said that during the special enforcement period, they generally increase the number of patrol officers. Any CHP officer who is available to work the holiday, who doesn’t have the day off or a prescheduled vacation, will be out working the road on patrol, he said.

New Year’s DUI Arrests Down in OC

While the DUI arrests were up in LA over the Christmas holiday, DUI arrests were way down in Orange County over the New Year’s holiday weekend. On Monday, the CHP in Orange County said that there were no fatalities over the 2016 New Year’s holiday weekend, just as there were none the year before.

Over the 2016 New Year’s holiday weekend, the CHP in Orange County made 42 DUI arrest as compared to 78 during the New Year’s holiday enforcement period in 2015.
