DUI Patrols Saturate Laguna Niguel and Laguna Woods

On Friday night and early Saturday (Oct. 16 and Oct. 17) deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s DUI Task Force deployed saturation patrols beginning Friday night and continuing through Saturday at 3:00 a.m. the Laguna Niguel-Dana Point Patch reported.

The saturation patrols were set up in the cities of Aliso Viejo, Laguna Woods, Laguna Niguel and Laguna Hills.

Deputy Manuel Cruz from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Bureau said that this was a “Zero Tolerance” crackdown. His message to Orange County motorists was, “Drive sober or get pulled over!”

According to information submitted by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, in addition to the pain and suffering caused by DUI accidents, drunk driving impacts the economy:

  • Over the last three years, DUI accidents in areas patrolled by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department have claimed 21 lives and injured 497 more.
  • After falling for five consecutive years, there was an increase in 2012 to 802 deaths because people failed to designate sober drivers.
  • The economic impact is approximately $9,000 for property damage only DUIs, $70,000 for an injury, and $1.4 million for a DUI fatality.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that each year more than 10,000 people die due to drunk driving.

In an effort to stop this deadly epidemic, law enforcement agencies in each state and in most U.S. cities has been cracking down on drunk driving, specifically from Aug. 21 and through Labor Day weekend in what has been dubbed the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
