Marine Accused of Killing Two Medical Students in DUI Crash

On Saturday, May 16, 2015 at approximately 1:30 a.m., an active duty Marine was involved in a wrong-way crash in San Diego that killed two medical students.

The Marine was driving a 2000 Ford F-350 the wrong way on Route 163 in San Diego, when he drove head-on into M. Cornwell’s 2014 Toyota Prius.

M. Cornwell, 23, and A. Baldock, 24, both medical students, were killed. Three more fellow medical students were injured. One of them is in intensive care, while the other two were treated and released.

According to the California Highway Patrol, J. Riley King, 21, is an active duty Marine stationed at Miramar. Shortly after the collision, King was taken into custody. As of May 19, he was still in the hospital being treated for major injuries.

Victims Attended High School in Rancho Santa Margarita

Cornwell graduated from Santa Margarita Catholic School in Rancho Santa Margarita in 2009. Her brother graduated in 2013, and her sister is a senior. Her parents are involved in the school and are known in the community.

After graduating from Santa Margarita Catholic School, Cornwell went on to attend UC Santa Barbara. This was her second year of medical school at UC San Diego.

According to Cornwell’s father, she was about to leave for Malawi where she was going to work on a nutrition project for impoverished communities.

On the night of the wrong-way crash, Cornwell was out with her friends – all fellow medical students –as a last chance to say goodbye before her trip. She had offered to be the designated driver for the group.

Santa Margarita Catholic High School has set up a memorial in the chapel for staff and students to remember Cornwell. A memorial was planned for 5:30 p.m. at UC San Diego on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, King has been charged with five counts of felony DUI causing injury or death, and two counts of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
