Fatal Mother's Day Crash Sparks DUI Investigation in Buena Park

On May 10, 2015, it was just another Mother’s Day in Buena Park when a split second changed a family’s life forever. It all happened just steps away from an El Torito restaurant located at Orangethorp Ave. and Valley View Street.

On Sunday afternoon just before 12:15 p.m., an elderly man was killed and his wife and daughter were injured after a pickup truck broadsided his vehicle, which led to a DUI investigation, according to the Orange County Register.

The truck was travelling eastbound on Orangthorp Avenue when it T-boned the sedan as it was exiting the parking lot of an El Torito restaurant. The impact of the crash killed the elderly driver, and injured his wife and daughter, who were both transported to Western Medical Center’s trauma unit in Santa Ana.

The driver of the pickup was transported to Long Beach Memorial’s trauma center; he was later taken into police custody, and is suspected of DUI. A police investigation is underway.

Buena Park Police Lt. Rich Forsyth said that the car that was struck was destroyed. He said that it was a horrific crash. When Orange County Fire Authority paramedics responded to the scene, they had to use Jaws of Life-type rescue tools to free at least one of the passengers from the family’s sedan.

Less than 30 minutes after the crash, all parties involved in the accident were on their way to a trauma center via an ambulance, said OCFA. So far, the police have not provided information regarding the names or ages of those involved in the accident, or whether the elderly man died at the scene, or on his way to the hospital.

One of the ambulances that were responding to the accident were involved in a collision at a nearby intersection. La Palma Police is in charge of investigating that crash, however, they have not provided any further information about the ambulance accident.
