Alcohol plays a big role in our social society, especially when it comes to holiday parties, after-work parties, and other types of gatherings. Regardless if you recently graduated college, are a stay-at-home mom who enjoys a few drinks with the girls, or a retired individual who is a self-proclaimed wine connoisseur, adults of all ages and from all walks of life partake in consuming alcoholic beverages. However, it is how you drink, where you drink, and what you do afterward that matters. To learn more about how alcohol affects your body, check out this blood alcohol concentration calculator provided by awareawakeal!ve.

Ways to Be a Responsible Drinker

If you are going to have a drink, or two or three, here are some tips that can help you stay in control while still having a good time:

  • The alcohol content varies widely in drinks, so check the label to find the alcohol content of your drink. Even wines have a significant variation when it comes to alcohol content.
  • Watch out for top-ups – be sure to finish your glass before having another drink. Otherwise, it’s easy to lose track of how much you are drinking.
  • Don’t forget to pace yourself. If you are going to be drinking over several hours with friends, you could wind up drinking a lot more than you realize. A great way to pace your drinking is to have a tall glass of water in between each drink.
  • It can be tempting to drink on an empty stomach because it allows for a faster “buzz,”
but if you have a quick bite to eat beforehand, it will slow down the absorption of alcohol in your bloodstream.
  • Never accept drinks from complete strangers, and never leave your drink unattended at a nightclub or a bar.
  • Mixing drinking with swimming, bicycling, boating, rock climbing, and other sports can lead to injuries, and in some cases…criminal charges.
  • Be aware that consuming too many drinks, especially within a short timeframe can lead to blackouts, otherwise known as alcohol-induced amnesia. If you’re going to binge drink, do it from your own home and ONLY around trusted friends or family and don’t get behind the wheel!

If you are going out for a night on the town, or over to a party at a friend’s house, plan how you’re going to get home before heading out for the evening. If you don’t have a designated driver, you have other options. Call a cab, take a public bus, or arrange to get a lift from a sober driver.

If you decide to walk home, do not walk through unlit areas or dangerous neighborhoods, and never walk home alone in the dark. If you were arrested for DUI, you need an experienced attorney who is a recognized leader in the field of DUI defense.
