SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – Earlier this month, a 29-year old man failed to stop at a DUI checkpoint set up in San Clemente; instead he crashed directly into it. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The collision occurred around 11:30 p.m. on a Friday evening when the man failed to bring his vehicle to a stop at a DUI checkpoint located at El Camino Real and Escalones between the hours of 7 p.m. and 3 a.m., said Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock.
Hallock said that the suspect was not injured, nor were any of the deputies at the scene. The lieutenant did say that the man was arrested on suspicion of DUI, and for failing to stop at a checkpoint.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department reports that on that evening, 568 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. According to the sheriff’s department, 523 vehicles were screened, 24 vehicles were directed to a secondary screening, and 10 drivers were subjected to field sobriety tests.
Why does California have DUI checkpoints?
Sobriety checkpoints, otherwise known as DUI checkpoints are police stops where officers set up on the road to randomly stop vehicles and check for drunk or drugged drivers.
DUI checkpoints are usually set up in areas with a history of a high volume of drunk driving arrests or accidents. They are also frequently set up over holiday weekends such as New Year’s, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Thanksgiving when impaired driving is known to increase significantly.
Not all states conduct DUI checkpoints, but California is one of them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) strongly supports the utilization of sobriety checkpoints, and it has made it clear that the agency believes that DUI checkpoints should be integrated into each state’s alcohol and drug-impaired driving program.
