Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s DUI Task Force were deployed over the weekend to identify impaired drivers as a part of the department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign.
DUI saturation patrols were deployed starting Friday, August 14th at 7:00 p.m. and continued through Saturday, August 15th at 3:00 a.m. in three South County cities including Dana Point, San Clemente, and San Juan Capistrano.
In addition to the above cities, Anaheim Police Department had a sobriety checkpoint scheduled for Saturday night (Aug. 15), which ran from 8 p.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Sunday on South Harbor Boulevard.
Sergeant Ray Wert from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Bureau said that this is a zero tolerance crackdown so “drive sober or get pulled over!”
DUI Fatalities Increase
After DUI fatalities fell dramatically for five consecutive years, 2012 figures show an increase to 802 deaths due to drugged or drunk driving. In the past three years, DUI collisions in areas patrolled by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department claimed the lives of 21 people and resulted in nearly 500 injuries, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
With this past weekend’s saturation patrols, deputies were on the lookout for drug or alcohol-impaired drivers as a part of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over!” campaign, which is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety grants, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
