Garden Grove PD to Receive $259K to Beef Up DUI Enforcement

The Garden Grove Police Department will be receiving $259,000 from the state of California this fiscal year to beef up the city’s DUI enforcement efforts, the Orange County Register reported.

The grant will be coming from California’s Office of Traffic Safety and will help the city fund DUI checkpoints to deter people from driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Without the funds from the Office of Traffic Safety, DUI enforcement would be greatly affected, said Traffic Officer Royce Wimmer.

Some Officers to Receive SFST Training

Some of the department’s officers will receive training on the use of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST), which teaches officers how to identify, apprehend, and prosecute impaired drivers.

Officers nationwide are trained on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) curricula-based SFST training program. The program has gained wide acceptance throughout the United States and is the approved sobriety test training program used by law enforcement agencies in California.

The Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Course is known by law enforcement as the impaired driver detection course. The two-day course was developed to increase law enforcement officers’ ability to detect impaired drivers.

Some of the topics covered in the course:

  • The NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, the Walk-and-Turn, and the One-Leg Stand,
  • Testifying in court,
  • Writing reports,
  • Studies on alcohol correlation, and
  • Recognizing evidence of a DUI violation.

The Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) is a battery of three tests administered in a standardized manner by trained law enforcement officers. The tests were developed by the NHTSA and conducted by the Southern California Research Institute.
