Suspect Held After Fatal DUI Accident in Santa Ana

A 41-year old Orange County man is being held under suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) following a fatal accident that took place early Sunday morning in Santa Ana. According to officials from the Santa Ana Police Department, the incident took place shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 21 when a motorcyclist crashed into the rear end of a car on the Southbound 55 near Warner Avenue.

After striking the vehicle, the motorcyclist was thrown off his motorcycle and landed on a nearby street. According to police reports, a witness stopped, called police, and attempted to render help to the injured motorcycle rider. As the witness was crossing the street, both he and the motorcyclist were struck by a third vehicle driven by the 41-year-old OC man whom drivers believed may have been under the influence. The witness suffered serious injuries and the motorcyclist died later that Sunday morning.

Although officials have yet to comment on the case, they have stated that the 41-year-old driver was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence at the scene. If charged, the man can face multiple charges for seriously injuring the witness (DUI causing injury) and for the death of the motorcycle rider (DUI causing death). In turn, he can face severe criminal penalties, including a significant prison sentence for DUI manslaughter alone.
