On Labor Day, law enforcement officers throughout Orange County finished an 18-day countywide anti-DUI campaign. The period of increased enforcement – part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign – involved 38 OC law enforcement agencies. From Friday August 15th through Monday, September 1st, local police, CHP officers, and sheriff's deputies focused heavily on arresting motorists suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. According to a report released earlier this week, OC authorities made a total of 775 DUI arrests over the 18-day period.
Officials detailed the success of the campaign, stating that this year's high-visibility enforcement period helped send a message to local residents that impaired driving will not be tolerated. Unfortunately, one death was attributed to an impaired driver in Huntington Beach on Labor Day. Last year, officers made a total of 793 DUI arrests during the same period, with four alcohol or drug related deaths.
The number of arrests made over the end of Summer campaign reveal just how much of an emphasis law enforcement agencies have placed one enforcing California DUI laws. While officers are always on the lookout for impaired drivers, they also conduct these periods of increased enforcement during times when alcohol-related accidents, injuries, and deaths are highest, such as holidays and weekends. Similar DUI campaigns are planned for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the winter holiday season.

During these periods, it is not uncommon for overzealous officers eager to increase arrest statistics to commit errors or violate drivers rights when arresting and charging suspects. Whatever the case may be, our legal team fights tirelessly to protect our clients from the charges and penalties they face.
