Passengers Injured After OCTA Bus Struck by Suspected Drunk Driver

A total of 15 people were injured after an Orange County Transit Authority bus was rear-ended Tuesday night in Santa Ana. According to authorities, the 23-year-old man driving the vehicle may have been intoxicated and is expected to be charged with driving under the influence (DUI).

The collision occurred near 17th and Fairview streets in Santa Ana shortly after 10:00 pm. The driver allegedly ran a red light in a Toyota Corolla before colliding into the OCTA bus. Emergency responders had to remove him from his vehicle before being taken to UC Irvine Medical Center.

The bus driver suffered a head injury and was taken to Western Medical Center. Seven passengers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities say six passengers suffered minor injuries.

While it is fortunate that no one was killed in this accident, the victims' injuries make this case much more serious. Should the Distract Attorney choose to pursue DUI charges against the driver who caused the crash, it can be expected that he will face elevated charges for an injury-causing accident.

In California, DUI causing injury can result in felony charges. Additionally, accused individuals can face sentencing enhancements for each additional person they injury, as well as when a victim suffers serious bodily injury.
