Man Arrested for DUI After Hitting Power Pole in Fullerton

After hitting a power pole in Fullerton, a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of DUI (driving under the influence) late Sunday.

The accident occurred shortly before 10pm Sunday. The driver lost control of his vehicle and struck a power pole, shearing it off more than six feet from the bottom. The pole was left hanging by wires, and Southern California Edison crews began repairing the pole early Monday morning. No lasting power outages were expected in the area.

DUI arrests such as this may occur after an auto accident, even if a driver is seriously injured or the specific cause of the accident has not yet been determined. If law enforcement has reason to believe that the driver may be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, they may administer a breath test or take a blood sample (or get information about a blood sample from the treating medical facility/hospital). A chemical test will yield information regarding the driver's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or the presence of drugs in his or her system.

Based off the test results and other evidence, such as witness reports, physical evidence and an officer's report, the driver may then be arrested for DUI. Whether the driver faces charges and the severity of charges filed will depend on the prosecuting attorney, who will be able to make these decisions based on the information at hand.

If you have been arrested for DUI after an auto accident, now is the time to consider protecting your interests. You have the right to legal counsel if you are arrested, and choosing to involve an attorney as early as possible may help you avoid the very serious repercussions of a DUI arrest, charges and conviction: license suspension or revocation, vehicle impoundment, incarceration, fines, court fees and more.
