Three Years' Probation for NBA Star Lamar Odom's DUI

Los Angeles Clippers' star Lamar Odom pleaded "no contest" to his DUI charge on August 30 of this year and will now face 36 months (three years) of probation in addition to a three-month DUI education course and nearly $2,000 in fines.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) pulled Odom's vehicle over after they witnessed the car swerving and showing other signs of intoxication while driving on the 101 freeway. CHP asked Odom to step out of the vehicle and perform a field sobriety test, which he failed. He was arrested and transported to the jail in Van Nuys.

Once at the Van Nuys jail, Odom refused to submit to chemical blood alcohol tests, which warrants an automatic license suspension in the state of California. A spokesman from the LA City Attorney's Office stated that the status of Odom's driver's license would be decided in a separate DMV hearing.

DUI cases have two components, as can be seen in this particular case. There is the criminal aspect and the administrative or "DMV" aspect. An individual can be convicted of the criminal act of drunk driving, but having their driver's license revoked is a separate matter that is dealt with by the local DMV.

At The Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry, we provide legal representation to clients in all aspects of their DUI case, whether that be at the criminal court hearing, the administrative license suspension hearing or both.
