DUI Defendant Upsets People with Community Service Request

A young woman accused of vehicular manslaughter is causing quite a stir in her community. After her attorney asked for community service hours to be served at a music festival, public outcry forced the attorney to remove the request. The suspect, 19-year-old I.V., has been charged with vehicular manslaughter for taking the life of a grandmother in 2011. While she was originally going to satisfy community service hours at a different event, she asked her attorney to change the venue. The prosecution wrote a letter to the judge stating that it would be inappropriate for her to attend the music festival in light of the severity of charges she is facing.

The police report shows that I.V.'s blood-alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit at the time of the DUI accident. Not only was she underage, but she was reportedly the designated driver the night of the crash. The victim, 68-year-old E.A., was taken to her home country of Nicaragua to be buried.
