Police Hold DUI Checkpoint in Costa Mesa

A Costa Mesa sobriety checkpoint last weekend netted at least oneDUI arrest.

According to police reports the checkpoint, located on Bristol Street at Randolph Avenue, led to the arrest of one person for suspicion of DUI. In addition, ten more vehicles were towed for various moving violations. In total, 30 driver's license checks were made, leading to 18 citations being given to motorists. One driver thought that he could avoid a fine by throwing his beer can out of the window. However, another police officer saw this, leading to a citation for open container. To make matters worse, his passenger was then arrested for an outstanding DUI warrant.

Overall, 1,381 vehicles passed through the safety checkpoint. Of those, 713 were screened, leading to five sobriety tests.

This checkpoint, like others conducted earlier in the year, was funded by a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by the California Office of Traffic Safety.
