Checkpoints Bring in Millions for Local Police Stations and Officers

An investigation conducted by California Watch and the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California, Berkeley, found that DUI sobriety checkpoints have caught more unlicensed motorists that drunk drivers. The investigation also found that impounding the vehicles of those arrested at the checkpoints creates a huge cash flow for local police departments. In addition, police officers are racking up millions of dollars in overtime pay for their time spent manning the checkpoints.

Specifically, local police earned nearly $40 million from fines and towing fees, and police officers collected more than $30 million in overtime pay.

What does this mean for you? It means you can expect more DUI checkpoints. You can be sure something so lucrative to the city and the individual officers who operate the checkpoints isn't going to go away anytime soon. So if you are planning on drinking, be sure to designate a driver or call a cab. The last thing you want or need is to be arrested for driving under the influence. But in the event that you or a loved is arrested for drunk driving, you can trust an Orange County DUI lawyer at the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry to aggressively defend your case and fight to get your charges reduced or dismissed.
