Drunk Driver Hits and Kills Bicyclist on U.S. Highway 98

A man riding his bike late last Friday was struck by a car and killed on U.S. Highway 98. Paul Shirley, 58, was riding west on the paved shoulder when a 1994 Mazda driven by Peter Armstrong, 28, hit him. He was thrown from his bike due to the impact.

Armstrong and passenger Brittany Stanley, 28, fled the scene of the crime. Police later found their car about 3 miles west on New Hope Road. Armstrong fled the car, leaving Stanley behind. Officers report that she received no injuries.

Police tracked down Armstrong on foot shortly after by Florida Highway Patrol officers; they arrested and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash involving death and DUI manslaughter.
