300 People Arrested for DUI in Orange County Over Holidays

An Orange County crackdown has led to the arrest of 300 people for driving under the influence. This was a multi-agency effort that went through Christmas, from December 17th to the 26th. During the same period last year 399 people were arrested in Orange County on DUI charges.

The campaign, called "Avoid," will last until January 2 and includes the efforts of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and other local police departments. During its maximum enforcement period, from 6 p.m. Christmas Eve through midnight on Sunday, the California Highway Patrol made 33 DUI arrests on Orange County freeways.

Despite their efforts there were still four fatalities and 658 DUI arrests over the Christmas holiday. Steven Block of the Automobile Club of Southern California cautions drivers to be safer over the holidays, especially since law enforcement officials are on heightened alert. A first-time DUI offender can expect to pay $12,162 or more in fines, legal fees, restitution, penalties and increased insurance costs.
