San Diego to Crack Down on DUI over Labor Day
Posted By Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry

During the Labor Day holiday weekend and beyond, law enforcement agencies in San Diego will be working with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to cut down on drunk driving.

It is reported that 14 police agencies in the county will be conducting sobriety checkpoint and have extra patrol units on the roads for the next several weeks.  The announcement was made by Ross Burns, the executive director for MADD in San Diego.

The upcoming effort is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's nationwide program which features the slogan "Drunk Driving.  Over the Limit, Under arrest."

Burns told new sources, "The timing for the crackdown is significant because Labor Day, a holiday celebrated throughout the nation with parties and parades, has unfortunately become notorious as a day when thousands of drivers make the deadly decision to drive drunk."

The campaign is meant to eliminate drunk driving incident and offers support for high visibility police action, mandatory ignition interlocks for those who are convicted of driving under the influence and development of vehicle technology to detect and stop someone who has been consuming alcohol from operating a motor vehicle.

Burns said that research shows highly visible and frequent sobriety checkpoint have reduced alcohol-related collisions and fatalities by an average of 40%.

3 Arrested at Costa Mesa Checkpoint
Posted By Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry

Three people were arrested at a Costa Mesa checkpoint over the week on suspicion of drunk driving.

Of the 318 vehicles screened at the checkpoint, three people were arrested for DUI, six vehicles were impounded, and nine citations were issued.

There has been an increase in sobriety checkpoints throughout Orange County, in large part due to grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety. Costa Mesa police say they have no plans to ease up on their DUI enforcement efforts any time soon. Sgt. David Makiyama, a spokesperson for the Costa Mesa Police Department, said the department will continue to conduct sobriety checkpoints throughout the year.

Makiyama said the goal of the checkpoints is to remove impaired drivers from the road so that they cannot harm themselves or anyone else, and spread awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry has extensive DUI defense experience, and can help if you’ve been arrested for drunk driving at a checkpoint. To schedule a consultation with an Orange County DUI attorney at the office to discuss your case, please call (877) DUI-QUEEN!

Checkpoints Bring in Millions for Local Police Stations and Officers
Posted By Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry

An investigation conducted by California Watch and the Investigative Reporting Program at the University of California, Berkeley, found that DUI sobriety checkpoints have caught more unlicensed motorists that drunk drivers. The investigation also found that impounding the vehicles of those arrested at the checkpoints creates a huge cash flow for local police departments. In addition, police officers are racking up millions of dollars in overtime pay for their time spent manning the checkpoints.

Specifically, local police earned nearly $40 million from fines and towing fees, and police officers collected more than $30 million in overtime pay.

What does this mean for you? It means you can expect more DUI checkpoints. You can be sure something so lucrative to the city and the individual officers who operate the checkpoints isn't going to go away anytime soon. So if you are planning on drinking, be sure to designate a driver or call a cab. The last thing you want or need is to be arrested for driving under the influence. But in the event that you or a loved is arrested for drunk driving, you can trust an Orange County DUI lawyer at the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry to aggressively defend your case and fight to get your charges reduced or dismissed.

Funding Used to Conduct More DUI Checkpoints
Posted By Virginia Landry

Planning to drink and drive? You better think twice.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, grants are being used to fund more DUI checkpoints than ever before. The California Highway Patrol backs up this statement with its most recently released figures. In 2009 there were more than 2,000 checkpoints throughout the state, during which 458 people were arrested for DUI, 2,370 citations were issued, and 1,453 unlicensed drivers were discovered. While the amount of people arrested for drunk driving is significantly lower than the amount of people ticketed for driving without a license, the CHP says people who drive with a suspended or revoked license are four times more likely to get in a fatal accident and 11 times more likely to drive under the influence.

The CHP still considers drunk driving a major problem in California, and Ramon Perez, an officer with the California Highway Patrol, says the CHP plans to continue hitting areas with a high DUI rate. In his own words, "We're going to get the most bang for our buck in terms of educating the public."

What does this mean for Orange County residents? If you plan to drink and drive-don't. If you do not have a valid driver's license, don't get behind the wheel and drive. The state is cracking down hard on drunk driving offenders and people who drive without a license, and the police will not hesitate to place you under arrest, issue a citation, and impound your vehicle. In the event that you are arrested, you can depend on an Orange County DUI attorney at the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry to help you address your charges or citation and work diligently to secure the best possible outcome.

Twitter Being Used to Warn About DUI Checkpoints
Posted By Virginia Landry

Police have long used DUI checkpoints as a way to catch people driving under the influence.  In the past, checkpoints were never announced, as the point was to catch unsuspecting drunk drivers.  Because drivers were never aware of where and when a checkpoint would take place, it was easy for police to catch people driving under the influence and place them under arrest.

Today, things are slightly different.  Like almost all aspects of our culture, technology has come in to play.  For some time now, newspapers and other news outlets report on where and when a checkpoint is scheduled to take place.  But now drivers are taking the matters into their own hands.  More and more people are twittering about DUI checkpoints to warn friends not to drive in that direction if they have been drinking. Because Twitter provides information instantly, a user can create a tweet warning his or her friends about a checkpoint as soon as he or she hears about it, sees it, or goes through it.

So how do police feel about using Twitter to warn friends about DUI checkpoints? There tends to be a difference of opinion.  Some police don't mind that people share information about the checkpoints, but just want to make sure that people who should be arrested for DUI don't evade getting caught, as those people are ultimately risking the lives and safety of other drivers.  Some officers are worried about drivers looking their cell phones while driving to check for warnings, as a many of the latest cell phone models have apps or access to the internet.  These distractions are incredibly dangerous, especially when a person has already been drinking.

If you were arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Orange County, please do not hesitate to contact an experienced Orange County DUI defense attorney at the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry for dedicated and aggressive representation. Contact the office today by calling (877) DUI-Queen, or click here to fill out a free case evaluation !

Police Step Up DUI Enforcement Over Holiday Weekend
Posted By Virginia Landry

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, eight motorists were arrested on suspicion of DUI in Lake Forest, despite warnings from the Orange County Sheriff's Department that drunk driving enforcement would be stepped up this year.

From Wednesday night at 5 p.m. through Sunday at midnight, the sheriff's department had patrols roaming the streets to look for intoxicated drivers.  The results?  Three more arrests than last year.  A small increase, but an increase nonetheless.

Deputies say they will continue to be vigilant in their efforts to catch drunk drivers, and there will be an increase in the amount of patrols in the coming weeks.

What does this mean for you?  As the holiday season continues, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure you do not find yourself in a position to be arrested for DUI.  It's easy to have one too many drinks at a holiday party or after a long day of shopping.  If you plan on drinking, make sure to arrange for a ride home, choose a designated driver, make plans to spend the night, or keep a taxi cab company's number on hand.  Don't allow yourself to become another statistic.

If you have been arrested on DUI charges this holiday season, please don't hesitate to visit www.duiqueen.com to arrange a free consultation.  As an experienced Orange County DUI attorney, I have represented countless clients throughout the area, and can provide you with the aggressive defense you need at this time!

DUI Patrols Are Coming To Your Orange County Neighborhood
Posted By Virginia Landry

As reported by the Orange County Register this month, the Orange County Sheriff's Department has received a significant state grant designed to arrest persons who have consumed alcohol and driven a vehicle.  $874,852 has been allocated for sobriety checkpoints (which notoriously do NOT result in many arrests) as well as roving DUI patrols (which do result in many arrests).

As part of this new money, police officers will become more aggressive in what we call COURT STINGS - hanging out in court parking lots, running the history on the license plates of cars parked in the court lots, and waiting to see who gets into the car when they leave court.  Some judges call this practice "FISHING" and believe it is an effective tool in getting people who are driving on a suspended license arrested.  Along with current technology which allows a moving patrol vehicle to scan license plates and respond by an audible "ding" these actions are now being funded for court parking lots. The same practice happens every day near bars and restaurant parking lots near you!

Obviously everyone wants the roadways to be safe, but the long arm of the law is not only reaching out to put you in the grasp of the officer's handcuffs, but is being used to search and find someone they may think is driving impaired or under the influence of alcohol, instead of to protect and serve when they actually view someone driving drunk.

If this has happened to you, please don't attempt to fight the government with all of its resources by yourself.  Call our office to arrange for your free consultation, 949-585-7400 or visit us at www.duiqueen.com.
