Orange County DUI Saturation Patrols

The spring marks the beginning of outdoor adventures in Orange County. From Laguna Beach, to Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim, to hiking at Crystal Cove State Park, the Pageant of the Masters, Huntington Beach Pier, Balboa Island and Angel Stadium, the possibilities for outdoor fun are endless.

With fun in the sun and warm evenings that don’t end until the sun rises, locals and tourists alike enjoy drinking and socializing while hanging out in South Orange County. Be it wine with dinner, throwing back a few cold ones while boating, or enjoying margaritas during a night on PCH, there’s an alcoholic beverage to go with virtually every warm weather activity.

Law Enforcement Steps Up Their DUI Efforts

Little do most locals and tourists know, come summer law enforcement agencies nationwide amp up their anti-drinking and driving efforts and kick into high gear. According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), each year in July and December, the You Drink & Drive. You Lose. National Mobilizations are conducted in all 50 states.

The NHTSA says that these efforts take place in July and December for a reason – the summer because that’s when alcohol-related crashes occur the most and December because holiday celebrations increase drunk driving. These are also known as “saturation patrols.”

What is a Saturation Patrol?

Saturation patrols refer to increased enforcement efforts, targeted to a specific area, with the goal of locating and arrested impaired drivers. Multiple law enforcement agencies work together and concentrate their resources to conduct saturation patrols and deter drunk driving.

In the past, DUI saturation patrols have been conducted by deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s DUI Task Force to arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers. Such DUI saturation patrols are typically set up in areas with a history of DUI arrests or accidents and are conducted on a Friday from approximately 7:00 pm until Saturday around 3:00 am.
