California DMV: Increase in Women Arrested for DUI

According to 2011 data released by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and analyzed by Southern California radio station KPCC , there was a significant increase in the number of females arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs. The increase was noted throughout California, as well as Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The analysis looked at 20 years of statistics relating to DUI arrests across the state. According to KPCC, there was an 11% increase in the number of women arrested for DUI between 1989 and 2011.

In 2011, the most recent year for which statistics are available, women made up approximately 24% of all DUI arrests in California. Researchers also noted that the increase in female DUI arrests was most notable from 1999 to 2011. Other interesting facts found by researchers include:

  • An 81% increase in DUI arrests of women between 51-60
  • A 67% increase in DUI arrests of women between 61-70
  • A 76% increase in DUI arrests of women between 70-76
  • DUI arrests of women ages 21-30 increased by 34% in LA County from 1999 to 2011

Those numbers are quite staggering. While alcohol-related DUI arrests were factored into the above numbers, we can’t help but wonder how many of those DUI arrests involved driving under the influence of prescription drugs. We mention DUI of prescription drugs because in recent years, prescription drug DUIs have increased exponentially nationwide.

DUIs Do Not Discriminate

The analysis of DUI statistics can help remind all Southern California and Orange County residents that law enforcement agencies have made DUIs, including drug-related DUIs, a top priority.

Anyone can be arrested for driving under the influence, and as these statistics reveal that women and older individuals are not exempt. This is due in large part to widespread efforts to arrest, prosecute, and convict drunk drivers, as well an increase in DUI checkpoints and law enforcement training that enables police to better identify impaired drivers.
