Driver Arrested for DUI After Deadly Palm Springs Crash

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – On Saturday (Feb. 27), a woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs after she was involved in a deadly rollover crash. On March 1, the California Highway Patrol used the tragic collision as a reminder to people to wear their seatbelts.

Saturday’s crash involved an SUV that rolled over, ejecting all four occupants because they were not wearing seatbelts.

The crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. on Highway 111 as the SUV was heading southbound. J. M. Robinson, 24, of Perris, was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer when the SUV wound up veering into the center median.

Once the SUV struck the center median, Robinson overcorrected to the right, which caused her to lose control of the vehicle. The SUV then shot across the lanes and onto the west shoulder, rolling over and ejecting the occupants. That’s what eyewitnesses told the CHP.

The CHP said that none of the occupants in the SUV were wearing their seatbelts, which is why each one of them, including the driver, were ejected during the crash.

One of the occupants succumbed to his injuries. The 27-year-old Perris man was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The deceased was identified by the coroner as L. Breedlove.

Ms. Robinson was also transported to the hospital where she received treatment for major injuries. She was later arrested on suspicion of drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs, according to the CHP.

There were two other passengers, a man and a woman ages 23 and 20 respectively, both from Compton. The pair were transported to local hospitals with only minor injuries despite being ejected from the SUV. They were the lucky ones.

In the aftermath of the fatal accident, the CPH issued a statement to the community, “Seat belts save lives; ensure that everyone in your vehicle is belted every time you ride.”
