Lyft Driver Killed in DUI Crash on New Year's Day

HAWTHORNE, Calif. – On New Year’s Day, a 21-year-old Lyft driver was killed in a suspected DUI crash, according to police.

At about 2:55 a.m. near the intersection of 120th Street and Doty Avenue, a Lyft driver, T. Anderson, of Torrance, was struck in a side-impact crash by a 21-year-old driving an Infiniti.

The suspected drunk driver of the Infiniti, A. Martinez Conchas, of Hawthorne, broadsided Anderson’s 2015 black Ford Fusion with his red 2003 coupe, according to NBC 4 News.

A witness, M. Felix, said that he heard the cars crash in front of his house.

Felix said that the guy that was driving was kind of scared. He heard him say that he hope he’s (referring to Anderson) not dead.

Unfortunately, the young Lyft driver who was working to bring in money for his family died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the red Infiniti was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, and for possession of illegal drugs.

Anderson’s father, R. Anderson told NBC 4 News that he’s not ready to let his son go. As he wiped tears from his face, he said it’s unreal that his son is gone.

Before the night of his death, Anderson told his father that he was looking forward to working New Year’s Eve because he would be earning a lot of money. R. Anderson said that his son was helping to support the family by driving for Lyft.

R. Anderson said that his son told him that he was happy doing what he was doing. He said his son would comfort him a lot by being a good son.

In the last conversation he had with his son, they agreed to meet for breakfast. The father and son spoke about an hour before T. Anderson was killed.

After Conchas was treated at a hospital, he was jailed at the Hawthorne Police Department, where he was held on $100,000 bail.

Interestingly, NBC happened to interview Anderson on Dec. 23 for a story on how ride-sharing services were now being allowed to pick people up at LAX.
