Changing Your Driving Habits After a DUI

Being arrested for driving under the influence is the fastest way for a person to change their driving habits. In the face of DUI charges, not only are they up against immediate penalties, such as jail time, fines, and a license suspension, but they usually face long-term ramifications.

In the aftermath of a DUI conviction, some DUI defendants lose custody of their children, have their professional license suspended or revoked, and end up spending a fortune on auto insurance.

With all of these consequences, a driver who has been arrested for DUI is well-served by reviewing their driving habits and looking for ways that they can improve.

What driving behaviors can you change?

If you’re one of those people who like living on the edge, or who have climbed behind the wheel after drinking one too many times, a DUI arrest proves how poor choices tend to catch up to us.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a driver who exhibits dangerous driving behaviors (e.g. distracted driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or reckless driving) has the risk of being involved in an accident more often than they think.

This risk can be reduced by making safe driving choices, and by engaging in driving habits that can prevent accidents and injuries.

Driving habits that should be avoided, include:

  • Tailgating
  • Texting while driving
  • Blasting the radio (we’re all guilty of this one)
  • Using a cell phone while driving
  • Driving when tired, angry, or emotional
  • Driving under the influence of medications that cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision
  • Not using a turn signal when turning or changing lanes
  • Forgetting to turn headlights on at night or in the rain
  • Failing to stay in the proper lane
  • Driving under the influence of a chemical substance, inhalants, or alcohol

Even if a driver is found not guilty of DUI, they can use the arrest to help them examine what driving habits may be cause for concern, namely driving under the influence and texting while driving, which can be as dangerous as DUI.

One way that a driver can improve their driving habits is by taking a defensive driving course. This will allow drivers to familiarize themselves with the rules of the road and provide tips and tricks for avoiding catching an officer's eye.

Of course, one of the best things to consider after being arrested for DUI is whether you’re in the habit of driving after drinking. Next time you plan to drink, think of your options, such as Uber, Lyft, a cab, or a designated driver, and always plan for a ride before you reach for a drink!
