DUI Checkpoints & Saturation Patrols Scheduled for Labor Day Weekend in OC

In late August, we reported that the Garden Grove Police Department was to receive $259K from the state of California to beef up its DUI enforcement efforts, and the department hasn’t been wasting any time.

According to OC Weekly, Garden Grove Police Department has been keeping its promise. The department has been holding DUI checkpoints and extra saturation patrols, which are slated to continue through Labor Day weekend.

The beefed up DUI enforcement efforts come on the heels of a case where a suspected drunk driver thrust himself right in front of Officer Jared Doyle by means of a head-on collision. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Aug. 23, which sent both men to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

Watch Out for Saturation Patrols Labor Day Weekend

If you’re going to be celebrating the holiday in Orange County over Labor Day weekend, keep in mind that saturation patrols will be continuing all throughout the Orange County region, brought to you by Orange County Avoid a DUI Task Force’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which is running through Labor Day, one of the deadliest times on Orange County’s roads.

As far as the DUI crash that occurred around 3:40 a.m. on Aug. 23, Officer Doyle and the other driver survived their injuries, however, the DUI suspect, B. Alexander Lopez, 21, of Stanton was charged with felony DUI and driving without a license.

On Friday evening (Aug. 28), the cities of Garden Grove, Newport Beach and San Clemente conducted DUI checkpoints, with saturation patrols continuing over Labor Day weekend.

The Orange County Avoid a DUI Task Force, which is supporting the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign in full force, is partnering with the California’s Office of Traffic Safety, and previously announced the Sep. 4 checkpoints for Fullerton, Tustin, La Habra and Santa Ana.
