NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – On Monday, June 1, 2015, an undercover sting
operation in Newport Beach caught not one, but eight people driving behind
the wheel just moments after exiting the courthouse with a
suspended license, according to CBS Los Angeles.
How did the authorities manage to go undetected? Orange County Sheriff’s
deputies dressed in plain clothes and hung outside the Newport Beach courthouse.
As they quietly lingered, they kept their eye out for DUI defendants who
were recently arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), and who
were not supposed to be driving because of their license suspensions.
S. Oseguera was one of the drivers who were cited in the sting. He told
CBS that his license was on hold because he was fighting a
DUI. Oseguera said that he guesses that they saw when he got out, and were
looking for him. He assumed that the deputies were spying on him, and
he was caught.
In Oseguera’s case, his violation led to the impoundment of his SUV.
According to officials, Oseguera has had multiple DUIs, and he is just
the kind of person they are looking for in their operation.
All Citations Stemmed from DUI Cases
OC Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Jeff Hallock said that the defendants
were driving on a suspended license, which is a violation of the law.
He said that the citations all stem from DUI cases, and that all of the
funding dollars, and all of the enforcement efforts are for combatting
driving under the influence.
Oseguera admitted that he shouldn’t have been driving on a suspended
license; he said that he couldn’t get a ride to the courthouse.
Now that he’s been caught, he’s facing hefty fines and more
According to the OC Sheriff’s Department, over the course of several
hours, the sting yielded eight citations – seven men and one woman.
