Fourth of July DUI Arrests in Orange County

On July 1, 2015, the CHP issued a press release urging a “safe and sober Fourth of July holiday.” The CHP told the public that while it wanted them to have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day weekend, the agency wanted the public to make safe and smart choices before getting behind the wheel.

In the release, the CHP made it clear that their officers were going to be out in full force during the holiday weekend in an effort to prevent injuries and reduce fatalities.

The Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) began on Friday, July 3, at 6 p.m. and continued through Sunday, July 5 at 11:59 p.m.

CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said that this was a time for celebration, not tragedy. He told the public to celebrate this Independence Day by having fun, but by also taking responsibility for the choices that they make.

Fourth of July DUI Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), during the Fourth of July period between 2008 and 2012, 765 people died in drunk driving collisions involving drivers with a Blood Alcohol Concentration of at least .08%.

The above fatalities make up 40% of all traffic fatalities over the same five-year time period.

Commissioner Farrow said that they wanted 2015 to be different, that they want everyone to celebrate responsibly and make it home safely. Farrow told drivers to designate a sober driver before heading out to celebrate, and for everyone to do their part to make sure that this was a safe holiday for everyone on the roads.

The CHP warned drivers that all available officers throughout the state would be deployed during the MEP to focus on:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Occupant restraints (seatbelts)
  • Speed violations

According to the CHP, last year during Fourth of July weekend in California, 32 people were killed and 70% of them were not buckled up. Additionally, over 1,300 people were arrested by the CHP for DUI.
