Linebacker Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers was arrested on Thursday
night (Aug. 6) for driving under the influence, hit and run, and vandalism,
according to police in Santa Clara, California.
After his arrest, Smith was booked into the Santa Clara County jail and
released on $26,000 bond on Friday. This marks the third arrest for driving
under the influence for the 25-year-old since joining the league in 2011.
A source from the 49ers told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that Smith was
on track and making good decisions. The source said that there shouldn’t
be a rush to judgment and that they need to figure out what happened and
not go into an instant panic. The source said there’s usually much
more to a story.
Smith Has Been Arrested for DUI 3 Times
Smith was arrested for DUI in January 2012; the charge was ultimately reduced
to reckless driving. He was arrested for DUI again in September 2013.
In that case, he voluntarily entered rehab and wound up missing five games
in the season. He was sentenced to 11 days of work release in July 2014
for that DUI in Santa Clara, California.
In August 2014, Smith was suspended from playing the first nine games of
last season for violating the NFL’s policies regarding substance
abuse and personal conduct, in connection to the DUI arrest in September 2013.
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, days before the latest arrest, 49ers GM Trent Baalke
said that he wanted the team to re-sign Smith.
Baalke said that Aldon’s like any young player. He’s growing
up and maturing. He said you see that a lot with these guys. They get
themselves into a few more situations that you wish they didn’t,
he said. Nevertheless, he’s really pleased with how Aldon has handled
things, and the way he’s been working personally and professionally.
According to Baalke, Aldon’s always been a great teammate, and he
has an excellent work ethic. We’re going to work hard to ensure
that he remains here, he said.
