TUSTIN – A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under
the influence after losing control of his vehicle and uprooting a tree
Sunday evening, police said.
F. Martinez, of Santa Ana was driving a white Audi RS 6 near Edinger Avenue
and Jamboree Road when he clipped another vehicle and lost control of
his car. The police responded around 5:06 p.m., only to find that Martinez
had struck not one, but several trees in the center island of Edinger
Avenue. He hit one of the trees so hard, he uprooted it.
Witnesses told the police that Martinez was driving over 100 miles per
hour and may have been racing when he clipped another vehicle. Tustin
Police Lt. Bob Wright told the
Orange County Register that the police were still investigating the cause of the
High-Speed Crash Was Similar to Paul Walker’s
After the crash, the Audi was nothing more than an unrecognizable, mangled
wreckage. The crash was not all that different from the tragic car accident
that took place at approximately 3:30 p.m. on November 30, 2013 in Valencia,
California, that took Paulk Walker’s life, star of
The Fast and the Furious.
In the 2013 crash, Walker and his friend, Roger Rodas left a charity event
for Reach Out Worldwide in Rodas’ 2005 Porsche Carrera GT. After
crashing into a concrete lamppost and two trees in a 45 miles per hour
zone on Hercules Street in Valencia, the car burst into flames. Both men
were pronounced dead at the scene, and Walker was said to have died before
he caught on fire.
While no alcohol or other drugs were in the systems of either victim, the
investigation did reveal that speed was the main reason for the crash;
the Porsche was travelling between 80 and 93 miles per hour, and the tires
were nine-years-old and seldom used.
In the Orange County crash, Martinez was far more fortunate than Walker.
Martinez only suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
He was cited for misdemeanor
DUI while at the hospital and was later released.
The posted speed limit for that particular stretch of Edinger Avenue is
55 miles per hour, however, according to Lt. Wright, there have been issues
with racing with the street in the past, though this didn’t have
any indications of being an organized or an impromptu race.
