Bruce Irvin's False DUI Confession Not So Funny

April Fools’ Day is celebrated every year on April 1st; it’s the day when people across America, the UK and other European countries play “innocent” practical jokes on each other. You know, replace the sugar with the salt, or play harmless pranks on your co-workers around the office?

But, joke about getting a DUI? Many critics agree that that’s under the category of “What on Earth were you thinking?” Seattle Seahawks outside linebacker Bruce Irvin thought that it would be a funny prank to announce on Twitter that he was arrested for DUI. He didn’t get arrested, it was all a practical joke in the spirit of April Fools’ Day.

In a tweet at 5:33 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Irvin said that before it hits the media, he wanted to apologize to his fans and the Seahawks organization once again. That he had made a terrible decision by driving after having a few drinks.

After 25 minutes, Irvin tweeted, “How many of yall thought I was serious?!”

April Fools’ Joke Regrettable Given Irvin’s Past

Irvin’s tweet wasn’t exactly well received, especially given his past. Before he was drafted in the first round in 2012 by the Seahawks, he was arrested twice, one of the times was for breaking into a drug dealer’s home.

While Irvin’s joke wasn’t meant to upset anybody, it wasn’t anything funny to those whose lives have been affected by drunk driving.

By 6:15 a.m., he obviously realized that his prank didn’t go over well with his fans. His next tweet said that it was a joke, and he didn’t mean to disrespect anybody. By 7:35 a.m., Irvin issued a full apology on Twitter, and even said he was banning himself from Twitter for the rest of the day.

Irvin was criticized by the media for not having any situational awareness. It is the offseason and NFL players getting arrested for DUI are not taken lightly. It’s only April and four NFL players have already been arrested on charges of driving under the influence. It is likely that someone over at the Seahawks will be reminding him.
