Halloween is a popular holiday among children and adults, with many of
the adult festivities involving alcohol. Because of this, Halloween sees
a significant increase in alcohol-related accidents, injuries, and deaths
– which is typical of most holidays. Knowing that the risks for
alcohol-related incidents increase on holidays and on weekends, law enforcement
officers throughout Orange County and the country will be cracking down
tonight and the following Saturday to arrest motorists who drive under
the influence (
Officials from Orange County law enforcement agencies announced this week
that they will be uniting the "Avoid the 38" Task Force. The
task force involves 38 different OC law enforcement agencies that will
be working together to conduct the following:
Sobriety Checkpoints – Officers across the County will be setting up checkpoints at various
locations to look for motorists who may be driving under the influence.
The checkpoints will also serve to check drivers for driver's licenses,
warrants, and probation violations.
Saturation Patrols – Saturation patrols involve more patrol cars on the streets looking
for signs of impaired driving, such as swerving, cars with their headlights
off, and other signs. They will also be responding to calls from concerned
witnesses who report drunk or drugged drivers.
The Avoid the 38 Task Force – which is being funded by grants from
the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA) – has been successful in making a
number of DUI arrests during the holidays, with the most recent effort
occurring on Labor Day Weekend. Officials are urging drivers to drink
responsibly or plan for a ride.
