More Delays in Beiber's DUI Case

Justin Bieber's lawyers need more time, they say, and Florida prosecutors agree. The matter has been reset for August 5 to accommodate the prosecution and defense as they work out a plea deal. Bieber was arrested and charged with DUI and resisting arrest back in January after he was pulled over by Miami police for what appeared to be an illegal street race.

Bieber's lawyers and the Assistant State Attorney will appear before Miami-Dade Judge William Altfield after the three-week extension is up to report on the status of the plea negotiations. If a plea bargain has not been reached, the August 5 hearing will be to set a trial date.

Although Bieber and friend Khalil Amir Sharieff, an R&B singer, were arrested during a street race, they were not formally charged with street racing. Bieber's charges include one count of driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and driving on an expired license.

Bieber underwent breath and urine tests after the arrest. His alcohol content was 0.02, which is above the legal limit for under-21 drivers. The urine test also revealed that marijuana and Xanax were in his system at the time of arrest.

Accepting a plea deal would mean Bieber's case would not go to trial. The prosecutor and Bieber's defense attorneys are currently working together to arrive at the terms of that agreement. Usually with plea deals, the defendant agrees to plead guilty to lesser charges or a lightened sentence in order to prevent the case from going to trial.
