How Many DUI Arrests Were Made in 2013?

The state of California typically a few years behind when it comes to compiling statistical data from DUI arrests. Therefore, the most current California DUI statistics are from 2011. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), in 2011 there were:

  • 17,474 zero tolerance suspensions (DUI license suspension for underage drinking and driving)
  • 114,859 first-offender DUI license suspensions
  • 43,095 repeat-offender DUI license suspensions
  • 7,572 suspensions or revocations for refusing a chemical test

These statistics of course take into account only those individuals who had their licenses suspended or revoked for DUI. The total number of DUI arrests would be much higher than this, since many people are able to avoid administrative per se (APS) actions.

Data indicates that DUI arrests in California decreased by 8.0 percent following decreases of 6.1 percent in 2010 and 2.9 percent in 2009. While Los Angeles County DUI arrests comprise 22.3 percent of all DUI arrests in California, Orange County had over 16,000 DUI arrests in 2011 – 1.6 percent of which were felony arrests, 97.8 percent were misdemeanor arrests, and .6 percent were juvenile arrests.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department tends to ramp up DUI enforcement on holidays, such as New Year's, St. Patrick's Day, and Super Bowl Sunday. Usually, the sheriff's department makes holiday DUI arrest information accessible to the public relatively quickly.

In 2013, The Orange County Register reported that on New Year's weekend there were 71 DUI arrests. The same weekend in 2012, the sheriff's department made 57 arrests. The year prior, 2011, there were only 37 arrests.

How many arrests on St. Patrick's Day?

Last year, police in Orange County arrested 45 people under suspicion of DUI while the year before there were 64 arrests.

How many DUI arrests on Super Bowl Sunday?

In 2012, 12 people were killed and 167 people were injured in DUI-related accidents on Super Bowl Sunday (statewide). That same year, the California Highway Patrol also reported 403 total Super Bowl DUI arrests in California and 20 DUI arrests in Orange County.
