NFL Player Gets DUI Charges Reduced to Reckless Driving

Michael Turner, an NFL football player, is now cleared to play again. Turner was formerly arrested for drunk driving and facing a possible DUI conviction, but a plea deal successfully reduced his DUI to a "reckless driving" charge, which is only an infraction. This case began back in September 2012 when he was pulled over and arrested by law enforcement for drinking and driving after a game.

The prosecution, in exchange for a guilty plea, reduced his charges to reckless driving and speeding. Turner also had to agree to certain terms of probation, including 12 total months in which he will attend DUI school, participate in drug and alcohol screenings, be required to submit to random alcohol screens and will not be allowed to consume any alcohol.

At the time of his arrest, Turner tested at a .109 blood alcohol concentration, well over the legal limit of .08 percent. Although he did not ultimately have to plead guilty to driving under the influence, he may still face fines and other penalties imposed by the NFL. The National Football League has a strict policy on substance abuse. Football players who are arrested for alcohol or drug related crimes while on contract could face a fine and two game checks.

Plea agreements are fairly common in DUI cases. Prosecutors might offer these deals in order to secure a guilty plea. This looks good on their record and also ends a case more quickly. In exchange, the incentive for the defendant is typically reduced charges or more favorable sentencing. If you have been charged with drunk driving, contact The Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry. We fight to get charges totally dismissed, and in some cases, reduced to a more favorable outcome.
