Your Impairment and Your Blood-Alcohol Content

When you are driving under the influence, you are at risk to an accident because you have been impaired by the substances you were consuming. Because of this, the federal government has determined that anyone with blood-alcohol content (BAC) of over .08 percent qualifies for a DUI conviction.

People who have a lower BAC than this will be let off with a warning to avoid drinking and driving. The only exception is when it comes to underage drinking. In these cases, the youth who is caught with even the slightest amount of alcohol in his or her system will be arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

But why did the government determined that .08 was the permitted limit for men and women 21 and over? According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, this is when your muscle coordination becomes poor. When drivers have a .08 BAC, they normally lose balance, the ability to speak clearly, and hearing abilities. Everything has been dulled by the liquid.

As well, at this point it is harder for the impaired person to detect any danger. The drinker’s reaction time slows, and he or she will slowly lose judgment. There is also a degree to which he or she will lose self-control and reasoning. Also at this point, a person loses concentration, and has a degree of short-term memory loss.

When driving, a person with a 0.08 BAC will lose control of their speed and may have reduced information capabilities. For example, these people may end up with a failure to detect traffic signals or visually notice any barriers that arrive in front of them. They will also have an impaired perception. With all of these problems clouding your ability to drive safely, it’s no wonder that .08 is the BAC limit for drunk drivers.
