Lost Your License? Rental Shop Encourages you to Try a Scooter

People who are charged with a DUI normally lose their license to the courts. For about a year, they need to rely on friends, family, carpools, and public transportation to get their errands done, or find a way to work and back. This is one of the most embarrassing and debilitating punishments that is often association with a DWI charge. Yet one shop in Florida is trying to make things easier on residents by offering DUI scooters. Essentially it's an electric-powered scooter that can carry you around town in a speedier fashion. Because you don't need a driver's license to operate the scooter, a lot of DUI convicts are able to use them to get where they need to go until they get their license back.

In order to keep the scooters legal, the store has set some restrictions. The little two-wheel bikes are manufactured so that they don't exceed 20 miles per hour. Even though there's some help form the electric motor, the scooter is in part powered by pedals, much like a bike. The scooter is also required to have a special seat height and can't be above 750 watts. The owner of this Florida DUI scooter rental store says that the restrictions on the scooter make it a viable and legal transportation method for people who are currently suspended from driving.

The operator of the scooter is subject to the same laws that bikers are when out on the road. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recently issued a statement saying that they are concerned about the advent of DUI scooters. They think the little bikes are a loophole that keeps offenders from suffering their full punishment. However, DUI drivers say that the bikes are certainly a step down from a normal vehicle, and they are very helpful when it comes to simple errands like meeting a friends for coffee at the local Starbucks or running to the market for a missing ingredient. If a person is caught operating the scooter while intoxicated, he or she can convict you of a subsequent DUI, so a little bit of responsibility will go a long way.
