Drinking, Marriage, and Divorce

Did you know that your marital status might have something to do with your tendency to drink? According to a new study by the University of Cincinnati in addition with the Pennsylvania State University, Rutgers University and the University of Texas at Austin, shows that men who are divorced tend to drink much more than those that are married. On the contrary, women who are married have a higher possibility of drinks per month than those who are divorced. The reasoning behind this is because most women are encouraged to drink by their husband. In most cases, women who divorced only had about 10 drinks a month, which averages to two or three per week. Men, on the other hand, had almost one drink per day, averaging a total of 26 per month.

When interviewed, women involved in this sociology study showed that they turned to food or friends post-divorce, while men turned to alcoholic drinks. The intoxicating beverages were a stress reliever for males, while females had a tendency to only drink when they were encouraged to do so by their husbands, partners, or other friends and family. All of this can translate into how these people drink and drive. Divorced men who drink a significant amount are at a higher risk to get in their car after a trip to the bar and consequently end up with a DUI.

When this happens, it can make your already-complicated life even more difficult. As a divorcing spouse, the last thing you want to have to worry about is court dates for a DUI offense, possible jail time, and additional fines. Yet if you do have to handle these difficult situations, then the best way to do it is with a confident and knowledgeable DUI lawyer by your side.
