Police Department Gets Grant to Combat DUI

As one of the states with the highest DUI arrest rates in the nation, law enforcement agencies in California are constantly working to reduce figures.

One county will be able to continue the fight thanks to a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Santa Monica Police Department received a $158,000 grant to continue operating DUI/driver's license checkpoints over the next year. While the grant does allot money for other operations, the focus is on DUI checkpoints to be conducted throughout the county.

Do these checkpoints actually work in bringing down the DUI rate? According to some research, they do. One study showed that DUI-related accidents declined by 20 percent when DUI checkpoints were well-publicized to the public. Research conducted by the NHTSA also shows that checkpoints are the most cost-effective manner by which to reduce DUI accidents and fatalities.
