Local Fire Department Captain Faces DUI Charges

It was to the dismay of an Orange County prosecutor that he had to charge a local fire department captain with felony DUI this month.

According to police reports, Capt. John Hines of Long Beach was driving on Westminster Avenue around 1 a.m. when he hit a bicyclist. He then fled the scene of the crime but was followed by eyewitnesses to his home, providing police with the identity of the suspect. He has since been charged with hit and run and felony drunken driving. If charged, he could face up to six years in prison.

Commenting on the case, Deputy District Attorney Andrew Katz said: "I consider this case rather egregious [...] Here we have a firefighter, a captain no less, someone with, no doubt, EMT training and whose job is to protect the community and render aid to those in need."
