New DUI Apps Cause Concern

Now that there seems to be an app for everything, politicians across the country are becoming increasingly concerned with apps that seem to make drunk driving acceptable.

There are some apps that provide users with information about speed traps and red light cameras, and now there are even some that warn about police sobriety checkpoints. Apps like Buzzed and Checkpointer are the concern of politicians who want to ban them from being offered at the Apple App Store and other markets.

A group of U.S. Senators sent a letter to Apple this month asking Research in Motion, an app developer, to remove the apps that identify the location of police DUI checkpoints. The letter was also sent to Google and Apple in an effort to remove all similar apps from the market. However, a spokesman for Google quickly responded that these apps not only didn't violate any laws but followed the company's own rules for software developers.
