Man Kills 6 While DUI

The man responsible for killing six Immokalee men back in September 2008 has finally seen his day in court.

Ewing Saunders, 68, was given 60 years in jail today for six counts of DUI manslaughter. The DUI accident took place on State Road 78 in Glades County when Saunders, driving a 2005 Peterbilt tractor-trailer filled with sand, failed to stop at the intersection of State Road 29. That is when he struck a 1993 Chevrolet van carrying the six victims.

At the time Jose Saavedra was driving. He was killed along with his five passengers: Jose Maria Arellano, 68; Rigoberto Reyes Perez, 20; Lucas Reyes Flores, 21; Sergio Saul Salazar, 21; and Oscar Humberto Reyes, 50.

When officers conducted a blood-alcohol content test on Saunders they found it to be 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Florida.
