Huntington Beach Ranks High for DUI Arrests

Data released last month by the California Office of Traffic Safety showed that Huntington Beach ranked number one amongst cities of its size for alcohol-related traffic collisions in 2009. During that year 195 people were injured or killed by drunk drivers in Huntington Beach. Although the data has not been released for 2010 yet it is worrisome to think what those numbers will be.

Also known as Surf City, they have been in this category in the top ten cities for the past decade. For cities with populations between 100,000 and 250,000 Huntington Beach ranks above 55 other cities. Realizing that they have a problem on their hands city officials are working overtime to determine a way to cut down on DUI arrests and deaths. Among the tactics that they are starting to employ is locating the establishments where DUI offenders are being served their last drink and talking sternly to managers who may be over-serving their patrons.

Another measure was loved by some but eventually shot down by the majority. The City Council decided against posting mug shots of offenders on Facebook who have had multiple DUI charges.
