DUI Arrests Drop by 13% in Santa Clara

Good news for Santa Clara County Sheriff's officers: DUI arrests dropped 13% during this holiday season when compared to last year's season.  The DUI crackdown program, "Avoid the 13," resulted in 537 arrests this year, down from 632 last year. This program runs from Dec. 17 through Jan. 2.

Fourteen law enforcement agencies benefit from the grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that funds this program. Spokesman Sgt. Rick Sung reported that there were no DUI-related deaths this year; 2009 saw one DUI-related death and 26 related injuries during that same time period.

There were several fatal car collisions, however, that didn't involve drugs or alcohol during the holiday season. One such case is Vanesa Cerda, 21, who perished on Highway 101 on New Year's Day. Details regarding her death have not been released yet.
