Citizens Call Police After Spotting Wrong Way Driver

Several calls from concerned citizens last week led to the arrest of a man driving the wrong way down Highway 101. Officers from the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to the Santa Barbara area around 8:20 p.m. to stop the man who appeared to be driving under the influence.

The driver, 64-year-old Leslie Dayka, was traveling south in the northbound lanes where he sideswiped a truck but kept driving. Officers were finally able to stop Dayka at Glen Annie Road by blocking the lanes of traffic with a police cruiser. The highway was closed for a period of five minutes in order to stop the drunk driver.

It was later determined that Dayka was definitely driving under the influence. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on DUI charges.
